For immediate release:

Toronto, ON Canada – April 21, 2020: hEr VOLUTION has formed a strategic partnership with Alexio Corporation. The goal is to raise funds in support of young women at risk with access to technology and STEM-based education. Learning is transitioning online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but many families have no access to the internet, or computers at home, and many young women will not be able to obtain the education they deserve. This will most likely affect young women from low-income families long after isolation, as times are unpredictable, and so is the future of education for many.

hEr VOLUTION, an organization that focuses on providing access to STEM education for young women from low-income households, is currently finding it challenging when it comes to helping the most vulnerable transition to online learning. According to Statistics Canada, 28% of Canadians do not have the internet at home, because they cannot afford it.

“We have seen numerous young women deal with this challenge first-hand in our programs. We know now that learning is not accessible to everyone and, for that reason, we are very excited to partner with Alexio Corporation and raise funds for this cause. It will mean more access to technology, internet at home and STEM education – which is now more important than ever for girls from low-income households.” says Doina Oncel, Founder and CEO of hEr VOLUTION.

hEr VOLUTION has been supported by Alexio Corporation in the past, having benefitted from sponsorship support for the 2017 and 2018 Women in STEM conferences. For the current campaign, Alexio Corporation will donate $25 from each sale of their new Defender Easy Start for Small Business package. See here: https://getalexio.com/hervolution/

‘I was shocked to hear the staggering number of families without computers or the internet. Today so much of what we do is dependent on connectivity. The COVID-19 crisis has been devastating for families, businesses, and organizations worldwide. Alexio recognizes everyone’s struggles and especially doesn’t want important charities to be at risk of folding because of a lack of funding. Underserved communities are hurt the most, many without access to technology at all. This means limited access to learning. We have to change this.Says Anne Genge, CEO of Alexio Corporation

hEr VOLUTION is looking forward to making further impacts within the tech sector, specifically in promoting STEM-related activities and career options for young women and girls from underserved communities from Ontario. More

What COVID-19 is teaching us about online learning

Coronavirus has saturated the media landscape over the past several months, impacting communities and individuals on both large and small scales. It is evident the impact that this virus is having on the most vulnerable populations in Canada, however, given the immediate healthcare challenges, not much of the discussion has turned to long term impact on vulnerable populations beyond the coming months.

We have found, through working with high school-aged women in the GTA, that 1 in 4 do not have access to a computer at home – a fact that is particularly damaging to universal and equitable access to education given that all classes have moved to online forums and classrooms for the foreseeable future. Statistics Canada reports that 19% of Canadians do not have access to hardware, which includes computers and that 28% of Canadians find internet access to be costly.

Although we live in Canada, one of the wealthiest countries in the world, it is a surprising fact to learn that a high volume of our population does not have a computer or internet at home, or both. And these statistics were all before the pandemic and the dramatically worsening economic situations in homes across the country. Knowing that millions of people are unable to work or have lost their jobs means that it will become increasingly challenging for greater numbers of our populations to continue to access the internet and computers. Thank you for breaking barriers with us #ThankYouThursday

Our #GvingTuesdayCA campaign this year has had a simple message: #BreakingBarriers

Why do we do this? Statistics show that although 59% of women are Science and Technology graduates, only 23% of them hold an Engineering degree and only 30% of them are Math and computer science, graduates. In 1987, only 20 % of the people working in STEM fields were female, a number that has raised up to only 22 % to date.

How are you breaking barriers for women in STEM this Giving Tuesday?

First, for the ones who are new to the concept, let’s start by discussing what Giving Tuesday is:

GivingTuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday. The “Opening day of the giving season,” it’s a time when charities, companies, and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community comes together for GivingTuesday.

GivingTuesday harnesses the potential of social media and the generosity of people around the world to bring about real change in their communities; it provides a platform for them to encourage the donation of time, resources and talents to address local challenges. It also brings together the collective power of a unique blend of partners – nonprofits, civic organizations, businesses and corporations, as well as families and individuals – to encourage and amplify small acts of kindness. Across Canada and around the world, GivingTuesday unites communities by sharing our capacity to care for and empower one another. More
