The holiday season is upon us and you’ve kicked-off with shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Now we ask that you begin your giving season with hEr VOLUTION.

Tomorrow, December 1st, is GIving Tuesday. Make a donation and give the gift of an opportunity. hEr VOLUTION aims to inspire young women and girls to achieve a better education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and to embrace STEM careers.

Our goal is to subsidize internet costs for girls in our programs and the breakdown is as simple as 1, 2, 3:

  • A donation of $65 will subsidize the internet cost for one girl!
  • A donation of $130 will subsidize the internet cost for two girls!
  • A donation of $195 will subsidize the internet cost for three girls!
  • A donation of $390 will subsidize the internet cost for six girls!

We are just over one week away from Giving Tuesday and we are so excited with the #Unselfie posts in support of hEr VOLUTION so far! Don’t stop now and keep your social media posts going!

Anne Genge, CEO of Alexio Corporation, believes that all girls can be rock stars in STEM

Melissa Madian was one of only six girls who graduated in Mechanical Engineering. She supports that science curiosity in girls should be celebrated and explored.

It’s not too late to post your #Unselfie photo and it would go a long way in raising awareness about equipping youth with skills and opportunities to embrace STEM careers through hEr VOLUTION.

Follow the 5 steps below; it’s very easy and will only take 10 minutes:

It has been an exciting couple of days and we are SO grateful for your support. Your #Unselfies have helped us raise awareness for the next generation of women in STEM. As you know, hEr VOLUTION breaks barriers and provides numerous opportunities for young women who wouldn’t otherwise have access to technology and education that would bring them closer to a career of their choice.

Let the #Unselfie season begin

Let’s start this blog by sharing about #GivingTuesday. This may seem familiar from when we first shared this campaign with you, a couple of years ago. Thank you for joining us! Your support helped us raise awareness towards our cause and we are very grateful.

What is #GivingTuesday?

GivingTuesday is a global day of giving. After the sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, GivingTuesday is a time to celebrate and encourage activities that support charities and nonprofits. Whether it’s making a donation, volunteering time, helping a neighbour or spreading the word, GivingTuesday is a movement for everyone who wants to give something back. #GivingTuesdayCA is the Canadian version of #GivingTuesday.

How is hEr VOLUTION engaging you on #GivingTuesdayCA this year?

For 4 weeks before Giving Tuesday, starting on November 1, 2020, we encourage our supporters to help raise funds, but mostly raise awareness about the cause they care about, in this case, hEr VOLUTION. Here is how it works:

  • Step 1: Download & Print the #Unselfie poster

  • Step 2: Write down why you support hEr VOLUTION

This #GivingTuesdayNow we’re making STEM education accessible to everyone! Together!

COVID-19 has had a hugely negative impact on all aspects of daily life, including impacting the economy and is creating unexpected challenges for communities. Unfortunately, underserved and marginalized communities are bearing the largest impact and are facing even greater barriers to equitable access to education than before.

Through our outreach work in these communities, we have found that:

  • 1 in 4 high school-aged girls do not have a computer at home
  • 12 out of 30 students in our program do not have access to a home computer 

During our GO!stem and STEMing UP programs, we teamed up with companies such as Salesforce and Shopify in order to provide participants with laptops. Additionally, during the STEM Summer Program, we teamed up with Sky’s The Limit Youth Organization in order to provide the young women with donated laptops. The young women were able to take these donated laptops and bring them to local libraries or community centers to access the internet should they not have available wifi at home.

We understand the importance of access to technology both inside and outside the classroom. Especially given that all schooling is being delivered online for the foreseeable future access to computers inside the home has never been more important.

We are very proud of the young women who have participated in our programming in the past, and we are proud to have been able to partner with organizations that support the mission of accessibility to education. However, we need to go further and ensure that access to technology goes beyond access to laptops. Our current mission is to expand access to the internet in the homes of those who cannot afford it. According to Statistics Canada, 29% of people struggle to afford and access the internet in their homes. This leaves a massive gap in the population where individuals cannot access valuable information and tools for learning.

We invite you to join us and make a contribution to our project to help deliver online learning to the most vulnerable population in our communities.
