Youth Committee

The Youth Committee is a diverse team of members who will support hEr VOLUTION with ideas and solutions concerning issues pertaining to youth in STEM from the underserved communities. They will focus on providing relevant advice and direction that reflects the organization’s values to maximize its impact.

hEr VOLUTION is an award-winning charitable organization working on providing access to innovative, education and employment services to girls and young women in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Given the wide diversity of cultural, regional, and interest-based communities across Ontario, we are looking to include young women in our Youth Committee. Our primary goal is to have representation when it comes to our operations and activities affecting girls and young women and to communities, predominantly in STEM fields.


Our mission: We provide educational programming to encourage and equip youth in underserved communities, particularly girls and young women, to explore and be inspired by science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) areas.
Our vision: To equip youth with skills and opportunities to embrace STEM careers.


General Roles and Responsibilities

  • Advise on issues that have the most significant impact on the accomplishment of the organization’s mission and strategy with a consideration of issues raised by community leaders and program participants.
  • Assist in the development of an ongoing review of the organization’s long-term planning and special initiatives.
  • Support the achievement of different committee objectives and provide recommendations through direct participation in the identification and cultivation of significant forms of support from individuals and organizations.
  • Contribute to hEr VOLUTION’s perspective and wisdom by sharing knowledge and experience to support organizational development and research.
  • Represent the interests and needs of external constituencies to the organization.
  • Communicate, endorse & advocate hEr VOLUTION’s Mission to external constituencies such as the STEM industry, to raise its profile as leading management education and employment provider to girls and young women in STEM, and to engender support and understanding of its goals.
  • Act as a responsible Committee member by actively communicating with the Committee teams and the Board members on a regular basis.
  • Be Vice-Chair of a hEr VOLUTION Committee and work with the Chair (a voting Board Member) to meet the committee’s short- and long-term goals
  • Actively communicate with the board and the committee team using emails, slack messages, calendar invites, and other forms of communication on a regular basis
  • Attend and actively participate in Board meetings as non-voting members.

Overview of Youth Committee Model

  • Year 1

• Become Co-Vice-Chair of a hEr VOLUTION Committee alongside a Board Member and work towards meeting the committee’s short- and long-term goals.
• Gain a comprehensive understanding of hEr VOLUTION’s programs, committees, and operations.
• Attend and actively participate in committee meetings and Board meetings as a non-voting member of the Board.

  • Year 2

Same as Year 1 +

  • Manage and support other volunteers from various hEr VOLUTION programs and initiatives.
  • Attend and actively participate in Committee meetings and Board meetings as a voting member of the Board (contingent to Board availability)
  • Year 3

Same as Yar 1&2 +

  • Train and be a peer mentor to incoming hEr VOLUTION Youth Committee members.

Meetings

  • Board meetings will occur once a month, on the last Wednesday of each month
  • Specific Committee meeting timings and frequency will vary
  • A reasonable reason (i.e illness, religious observance, etc) must be provided 48 hours in advance, when appropriate, for all absences
  • Both present and absent members are responsible for sending any updated work to the Committee Chair before the meeting and reviewing the meeting minutes, following up with appropriate members, and completing any assigned tasks after the meeting

Term of Appointment

 hEr VOLUTION will offer a three-year term of appointment to each Youth Committee member, at the close of which they have an opportunity to be re-appointed on a yearly basis.

Progression through the Youth Committee Model will depend on engagement and performance, which will be evaluated on a yearly basis, with formal and informal check-ins occurring throughout the year.


We are looking for young women who are between 18 and 29 years of age with the following skills and interests:

  • STEM background
  • Marketing background
  • Financial and/or Fundraising

Former hEr VOLUTION program participants will be given priority*


Applications open once every 2 years.

We appreciate all applications, however, only those who are the age of 18 to 29 are eligible to apply and will be contacted for an interview.
