Women in tech : a key success factor for COVID economic recovery

On March 6, 2021, men and women from around the world launch a call to action for more women in tech: they invite governments to publish an official ranking of establishments/universities teaching STEM based on the proportion of women among graduated students.

With more than 200 hundred personalities representing the public and the private sector, Doina Oncel, Founder of hEr VOLUTION, has joined the call initiated by Claudine Schmuck, author of Gender Scan, including to raise attention on the lack of progress for women in tech while the examples of Katalin Kariko, Laurence Devillers, Esperanza Martinez Romero, Ritu Karidhal, and Catherine Ngila demonstrate how influential women’s contribution to innovation can be.

Today fewer women enter scientific and technical studies, where they only represent 34% (i) of all STEM graduates in the world. This situation worsens on the job market in part due to sexism, where the proportion of women drops to 28% among scientists and engineers (ii)

The call for action invites governments to officially publish each year a ranking of STEM universities by the proportion of graduated women. This action will enable to evaluate the ability of universities to attract and retain the women needed by public and private R&D. It will enable to measure the progress from one year to the other the evolution and the effectiveness of solutions implemented.

Developing indicators for action is the focus of Gender Scan. Each edition enables to measure accomplishments as well as next steps. Co-constructed with partners representing students, SME & co-workers, and employees the 2021 survey will remain focused on highlighting achievements and identifying key actions for each target audience: teenagers, students, SME & co-workers, and employees.

As of March 6, 2021, the call for action will be available on  https://www.genderscan.org/. It will remain open to new signatories after March 8, 2021.

Raise The Barre to raise funds for hEr VOLUTION in celebration of #IWD2021

In celebration of International Women’s Day, Raise The Barre committed to raising money for a cause that would help other women grow and succeed! As two young women with a background in Engineering and Business, they feel extremely passionate about supporting women in STEM. hEr VOLUTION gives students the opportunity to explore STEM and empowers them to pursue their goals and dreams!

Both Sarah and Stass come from the corporate world and started Raise The Barre as a part-time fitness business. Sarah graduated from University with an Engineering background, and Stass has graduated with an Accounting and Finance background. They met and bonded over their passion for Fitness. They started Raise The Barre with a goal to form a community of strong, like-minded women, who are always looking to challenge themselves.

To help with this fundraising initiative, Stass and Sarah will be running a virtual fitness session on March 8, 2021, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM (EST) with all proceeds going to hEr VOLUTION. Registration is required and a Vimeo link will be sent to all registrants.

Jasmine Shaw, February’s #hErVOLUTIONHero

Monthly giving is one of the best ways to support hEr VOLUTION and is the safest, simplest and most effective way to donate, by committing to make as large or as small a gift as you wish. Monthly donors are the most loyal of supporters and the backbone of any non-profit organization.

We would like to show our gratitude to our hEr VOLUTION Hero monthly donors, who committed to contributing to our efforts in inspiring young women to embrace STEM careers. Jasmine Shaw has made it one of her commitments in 2021 to regularly contribute to an organization that is aligned with her personal mission of creating opportunities for young girls in STEM.

Becoming a monthly donor allows you to spread your donations out throughout the year, providing hEr VOLUTION with a dependable foundation of support. It can be as flexible as you want, so you can start off low (i.e. $10 per month) and can be increased or decreased at any time, and 100% of your gifts are eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Monthly donations also provide more security for hEr VOLUTION and give us the ability to plan ahead for more opportunities for young women and invest in our STEM programs long-term. The best part about monthly giving is it allows you to make a bigger impact. Every and any amount counts and when they all add up, the effect is far greater than most single donations. Sign up to be a hEr VOLUTION Hero today and start making a big difference!

Why did you decide to become a monthly donor for hEr VOLUTION?

As a woman, engineer, and advocate for diversity in STEM, hEr VOLUTION’s mission resonates deeply with me. I am fortunate to have been provided opportunities and encouragement as a young girl to pursue a career in STEM; I believe it is my responsibility to now do the same for others.

In your opinion, why should others become monthly donors?

Community-based organizations like hEr VOLUTION have a tremendous impact on the youth they serve. It’s critical that those of us with the means support organizations we believe in because they are empowering the generation that comes after us. Pragmatically, I think it’s important that we budget for charity donations rather than treat it as an after-thought (“if I have money left over at the end of the month, then I’ll donate…). Once you set up a monthly donation and budget for it, you won’t even notice the money is gone – I promise!

Celebrate your success in competitive professional landscapes despite self-doubt #NEM2020

I am here to tell you a story that talks about the limitations that we create around our pursuit of professional success and the importance of understanding what we are doing to celebrate our accomplishments.

The story is about myself: I was born and raised in Venezuela, a beautiful country that is, unfortunately, facing a very difficult political, social and economic crisis, but that is a topic to cover on another occasion. I just wanted to make you aware that I am indeed an immigrant in case you find grammar spellings, know that I am doing my best.

My life there was simple. I was a regular girl who loved daydreaming. My dad used to tell me that I was always distracted imagining things that may never happen and that I needed to concentrate more if I wanted to achieve big goals. Despite what it was perceived as lack of attention I managed to become one of the top students at the end of my senior year in high school, to the point of being selected to give the speech on our graduation day. I remember not understanding why I had been chosen. Out of at least 5 top female students, WHY ME?. That was the first time that I met my Inner Critic More

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

hEr VOLUTION to partner with the Metamorphosis Girls STEM Conference for the third year in a row

Toronto, ON., January 28, 2019 – hEr VOLUTION is proud to announce the partnership with the Metamorphosis Girls STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Conference for the third year in a row. The Metamorphosis Girls STEM Conference was first hosted and organized on March 8, 2017, International Women’s Day, by John Polanyi Collegiate Institute in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). The event was created to support girls at a critical time when they are likely to become disengaged with STEM. Girls in middle school may lose interest in STEM studies and careers despite high academic achievement in these disciplines, and a much lower number of women compared to men are choosing to enter and stay in careers in STEM fields, especially in the areas of mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science.

The mission of the Metamorphosis Girls STEM Conference is to foster partnerships with people and organizations who are dedicated to creating welcoming spaces for girls in STEM, while engaging girls in the making of their own STEM stories. Through a day of hands-on workshops, inspirational speakers and mentorship, the conference hopes to spark curious questions in the minds of its attendees that will lead them down a long and incredible journey in STEM.

“We are honoured to be a part of the Metamorphosis Girls STEM Conference for the third year in a row. We see the great value that this conference brings to girls in middle school in the form of workshops, STEM Talks and speaker Panel. The organizers of the conference continue to do a great job in bringing together ideas and the necessary network of organizations to support its mission. We look forward to continuing to support the conference moving forward as we see this partnership as a long-term impact by inspiring girls to embrace STEM careers” says Doina Oncel, Founder/CEO of hEr VOLUTION. Let Tablettistes 2018 – For A Bright Digital Citizenship

On March 7, 2018, our Founder, Doina Oncel, will be sitting on a panel at this conference along elite speakers discussing Inclusive Future Trades Through FEMALE LEADERSHIP.

“65% of children currently entering elementary school will be doing jobs that don’t exist yet.” World Economic Forum (2016)

The ecosystem of jobs changes every day. One trend remains, however: in Canada, less than a third of those who are employed in a STEM field are women, and less than a fourth of managerial positions (management, chairmanship, vice-chairmanship) are held by women. Yet a 2017 study by McKinsey & Company (“The Power of Parity: Advancing Women Equality in Canada”) claims the fight against gender inequality could fetch anywhere between 150 and 420 billion dollars for the Canadian economy by 2026.

With this in mind, how can we shape inclusive future jobs (all genders, ethnicities, handicaps, ages, sexual orientation…) to create a collaborative and diverse job market? Female leaders from a variety of backgrounds will be sharing their experiences and opinions about the challenges tomorrow’s leaders will encounter. More
