When we started the 150 Days of Canadian Women in Stem social media campaign back in February, we did wonder if it may be too ambitious. Profiling six different women each week, from mid-February to mid-July? Would we even be able to come up with enough Canadian women involved in STEM to feature? Would there be any interest? How could we keep it going for so long?
Not one to back down from a challenge, Doina Oncel, founder and Executive Director of hEr VOLUTION, was determined to push forward, believing in the importance of highlighting the achievements of Canadian women. She wanted to showcase these women as examples of the countless ways in which women can have an impact in STEM fields, and, in so doing, encourage more girls and young women in Canada to consider careers in these areas.
Finding women to profile has proven to be interesting rewarding, and easier than expected — Canadian women who are involved in STEM are happy to get involved and share their stories. Many of the women that we’ve featured are already taking on mentoring or advocacy roles for girls and women in STEM, so they are eager to be a part of this project. Thanks to their generous support and contributions, and to eager audiences who view and share the social media posts, we are building up an invaluable library of role models and the campaign is going strong as we wrap up the 9th week!
Here are the six women that were introduced this week:
- Dr. Stephanie Willerth, engineer and Director for the Centre for Biomedical Research
- Kristina Doxsee, certified Medical Laboratory Technician and advocate of women in STEM
- Nancy Margaret Reid, professor and theoretical statistician
- Claire Cupples, Dean of the Faculty of Science at Simon Fraser University
- Hanna Saidi, economist, policy advisor, and consultant
- Dr. Connie Eaves, award-winning scientist, professor, researcher, and mentor
