hEr VOLUTION presents: “#Impact2020 Actioning Your Career Vision” online webinar

For immediate release

Toronto – March 23, 2020 – The global pandemic due to COVID-19 is disrupting how we deliver educational materials for students, particularly young women who are looking to start their careers in STEM. To alleviate that, hEr VOLUTION is hosting a special online webinar on Monday, March 30, 2020, at 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. called #Impact2020: Actioning Your Career Vision. This webinar is dedicated to supporting high school and post-secondary young women looking to start their journey in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) industries.

hEr VOLUTION was scheduled to host their fist #Impact2020 STEM Career Fair for Girls, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, strategic measures were taken and the career fair was canceled as consideration of the health and safety of its community members, including students, volunteers, and community partners.

This #Impact2020: Actioning Your Career Vision event was made possible by the support of NEM Ontario, an organization supporting post-secondary students and professionals at all stages in their career to navigate increasingly rapid changes within engineering and technology.

“We understand that these are trying times for everyone, and this is why we are happy to have partnered with NEM Ontario and Shannon M. Pole Solutions to deliver alternative career support hosted online. We do this to continue to support girls, despite today’s uncertainties” says, Doina Oncel, Founder/CEO of hEr VOLUTION

Special guest, Shannon M. Pole, Head of International Training Institute of NLP & Hypnosis, will be leading the webinar. Combining her engineering background with her career coaching expertise, participants will learn how to focus on their career vision, reach for opportunities, obtain their goals and achieve success in their STEM career.

Date: Monday, March 23, 2020
Time: 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.

How #GOstemWeek is breaking barriers for girls in STEM

GO!stem started back in 2014 when both hEr VOLUTION and Salesforce’s Women’s Network joined forces to help inspire girls to pursue STEM careers. During our first year, when we started with the GO!stem Program back in 2014, we hosted 20 girls and were able to hire young women to help coordinate the program, all coming from underserved communities of Toronto. 5 years later and the GO!stem Program has invested in over 150 young women, hired former participants to help them with building leadership skills, and each year our waitlist is growing enormously as the demand for this program is always increasing.

Today, during the launch of the official #GOstemWeek, we celebrate this epic event and announce to the world that we are ready to take a stand in closing the gender gap in tech one GO!stem program at the time.

We would like to thank our Mayor, Mr. John Tory for standing with us in making a change and for including diversity in tech by proclaiming this week the GO!stem Week.

Thank you to Tia Joseph for sharing your inspiring story and why you believe in this program so much. Tia Joseph has been a major supporter to the GO!stem program from the beginning and we are honoured to have Tia Joseph volunteer, facilitate and engage Salesforce staff to give back to the community.  More

hEr VOLUTION announces August 12, 2019 the official GO!stem week

For immediate release:

Toronto, Ontario, Canada – July 26, 2019 – Mayor John Tory has proclaimed the work week of August 12 through August 17 to be hEr VOLUTION GO!stem Week in the City of Toronto. hEr VOLUTION has delivered the GO!stem Summer Program for the past 5 years. Successfully it has impacted over 150 young women who participated in the program and each year the program grows significantly.

“For the past 5 years, we have worked to create opportunities for so many young women who are interested in learning about technology. Seeing the impact that this program has had for so many young women, we are incredibly grateful to get more young women excited to learn about coding and have the opportunity to engage first-hand with employees in tech companies.

We hope that by proclaiming GO!stem week this year, we will encourage more role models and companies to get involved in this yearly event. “ says Doina Oncel, Founder of hEr VOLUTION.

Research shows that mentors play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to make responsible choices, attend and engage in school, and reduce or avoid risky behavior. What we know for sure is:

  • 7 out of 10 largest STEM occupations are computer-related
  • Girls’ interest in STEM peaks in middle school, but drops off by highschool
  • 74% of middle school girls express an interest in engineering, science, and math
  • Women make up only 18% od computer science undergrads.

GO!stem Program, by which declaring GO!stem week was inspired by, enables 13 to 17 years old girls with the opportunity to explore technology in a new and exciting way. The program offers young women the opportunity to learn from tech professionals inside a tech company, and because we work with young women facing multiple barriers, food and transportation cost is covered for the girls.

Since its inception in 2014, the program has been delivered in partnership with Salesforce Women’s Network and the collective goal has always been that the girls participating in this program walk away with valuable new coding skills and new insight into their future in STEM.

hEr VOLUTION will have an official celebratory event, inviting media, industry professionals and young women on August 12, 2019.

“What if the cure to cancer was stuck in someone’s mind who couldn’t afford an education?”

This is a question that Doina wakes up to every morning.

“What I realized from doing what I do, a lot of the young women are very determined. They all just want a chance; they all want an opportunity.” Doina says, “What upsets me is that there are so many barriers preventing them from being that person they are meant to be.”

Growing up Doina Oncel had many career aspirations. She wanted to be either a teacher or a lawyer because she believed that they make a difference in the world. At the age of 19, she immigrated to Canada with her father and practiced hair dressing for 10 years.

“We start at a place where we never thought we were going to start and we never realize where our path takes us where we are supposed to be,” says Doina, “I did a lot of things that were not necessarily who I was. It wasn’t satisfying.” More
