STEMing UP Partner Feature, Issa Paez of Citrix Canada

At Citrix, we believe that a well-educated workforce provides opportunities for young people and helps our economy grow.  Additionally, we believe that companies that employ more women and have women in leadership roles outperform companies who don’t, and that’s why we support programs that work towards increasing women representation in the workplace especially in STEM fields.

Did you have a mentor growing up? If so, how did you find them and how old were you?

I did not have a mentor growing up; however, I did find a few mentors during my career that coached and helped me develop personally and professionally.  There were individuals in my workplace that I admired because of their wisdom and knowledge, and I wished to learn from them.  I took it upon myself to ask them if they would take me as their mentee, impart some of their knowledge, and guide me through my professional career.  I encourage you to reach out to someone you admire and want to learn more from, and that person will gladly take you as his or her mentee.

Are there any activities or hobbies you wish you had become involved in as a teen that would have prepared you for the role you have today?

Public Speaking would have been an activity I wish I had become more involved in as a teen.  Through my career, I have found that being able to deliver effective and powerful presentations is essential for success.  Yet, few of us are ever trained or coached for this important task.  I would encourage youth to start developing their public speaking skills as early as possible, as more opportunities open up for you when you are able to articulate your ideas and opinions clearly.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?

Be fearless.  Fear holds us back from accomplishing our goals and achieving our dreams. It has taken me a few years to let go of some of my fears such as fear of the unknown, rejection, and being laughed at; but, the moment I let go of those fears I felt empowered, free, and unstoppable. I enjoy life more now that I don’t let fear control me.

How were you involved with the STEMing UP Program and what was your experience like?

My involvement with the program progressed from just a passive supporter to an active supporter.  Initially, I supported the STEMing UP program with a corporate financial donation as well as providing space at the Citrix office for the group to meet for three sessions. However, after I attended their second session as a guest speaker, I was impressed with the group work and collaboration I observed from the girls.  Seeing them in action inspired me to be a part of the work hEr VOLUTION was doing through STEMing UP program and become a more active participant.  I started to attend their Saturday sessions frequently and help the girls and program organizers with anything that was required.  Being an active participant was a rewarding experience as it gave me an opportunity to interact and learn from these girls as well as observe their progress and growth during those two months.

Would you encourage other companies to support this program? If so, why?

The STEMing UP program is a phenomenal way to introduce young girls from underserved communities to topics relating to STEM (science, technology, engineering, math). It provides a positive learning environment where participants can not only gain or enhance their confidence skills but also their teamwork and presentation skills.  Moreover, the program provides opportunities for participants to network with business professionals and gain exposure to various corporate environments.  I would encourage other companies to support the STEMing UP program, not only financially but also through volunteering, as it provides opportunities for young girls to get exposure to education and resources that are not available in their communities.
