Introducing STEMing UP

STEMing UP is for girls and gender non-conforming youth in Ontario aged 13-17 who are interested in computer science but face multiple barriers accessing relevant learning opportunities. The purpose of this (free) program is to remove these barriers and increase their chance of an education and career in tech.

In collaboration with Canada’s technology leading industry partners such as Shopify and okta, STEMing UP Program aims to equip BIPOC girls and gender non-conforming youth in Ontario with the confidence, skills, professional portfolios, and networks to pursue fulfilling careers in the STEM industries.

Participants have the option to return for two years in the program and are increasingly challenged with real-world problems set by mentors, and solved through skills they develop in the program.

This course will provide:

  • A safe space for young women to learn computer science and decision-making skills
  • Project-based assignments in order to develop and produce a portfolio of work
  • Mentorship on a portfolio, college application process and/or financial aid
  • Information around and exposure to the Shopify’s Dev Degree Program
  • Networking and mentorship opportunities with educators, industry professionals and employers
  • A peer-support network that will build confidence, friendship, and learning momentum

Additionally, participants could receive:

  • Up to $100 WiFi allowance for low income participants
  • Volunteer hours provided upon request
  • Scholarships offered to winning teams at the end of program

While our program is open to youth from all backgrounds, priority is given to low income, newcomer, BIPOC, 2LGBTQI+ youth and other underserved girls.

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYIN’

I can honestly say that this program taught me so much more than just coding! After leaving the program I walked through the world as an entrepreneur, critical thinker and a leader. I can look back at my summer with hEr VOLUTION and point it out to an important milestone in my personal and professional journey!

The program made me realize that stepping out of the box is important. Experiencing the program made me more confident and motivated to take on projects I’d be afraid of doing out of expected failure, and I feel grateful that I don’t think that way anymore.

More about the program:

In collaboration with Ontario technology leaders (including Shopify and Okta), STEMing UP aims to equip participants with the confidence, skills, professional portfolios and networks to pursue fulfilling careers in the STEM industries.

The program can span two years, with participants increasingly challenged with real-world problems set by mentors, and solved through skills they develop in the program.

Participants will learn:

  • Design Thinking
  • Coding
  • App Building
  • Prototyping
  • Analytical Thinking and problem-solving
  • Business and Leadership Skills
  • Pitching
*The challenges that participants will work on as a project for the program will be using the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 SDGs are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
