(Toronto, ON) – hEr VOLUTION is delighted to welcome the support of The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) as a silver sponsor for the 2nd annual Canadian Women in STEM Conference; Breaking Down Barriers: Unleashing the Power of Inclusion.

The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) is a non-profit, self-governing, professional association of over 25,000 members.

OACETT is Ontario’s independent certifying body for engineering and applied science technicians and technologists and confers the designations C.Tech. (Certified Technician) and C.E.T. (Certified Engineering Technologist). These designations are recognized across Canada by employers and other engineering professionals. The A.Sc.T. (Applied Science Technologist) designation is no longer conferred but is still used by some OACETT members.

OACETT promotes the interests of engineering and applied science technicians and technologists in industry, educational institutions, the public, and government.

“OACETT believes in the power of women in STEM, and that inclusion is critical to future success. We are pleased to support hEr VOLUTION as we are committed to helping create opportunities for the next generation of women in technology.” , says Kim Pickett, C.E.T., LET, President-elect OACETT. How we’re breaking barriers for International Day of the Girl Child #ClaimYourPlace

Canadians recognize how important girls are to our future.

That’s because Canadians believe that every girl deserves an equal start in life and the chance to grow to her full potential. That equality starts with clean water, healthy food and a safe place to live. It starts with education, support from the community and freedom from violence.

Together, we can create these conditions for girls across the globe. We can show them that gender equality is, not just possible, but necessary. Our future depends on it.

From Status of Women Canada

At hEr VOLUTION, we recognize the importance of access to quality education and the support from the community as we see that there is still a big need to include girls and young women in STEM learning. More

(Toronto, ON) – hEr VOLUTION is thrilled to welcome the support of Index Exchange as a silver sponsor for the 2nd annual Canadian Women in STEM Conference; Breaking Down Barriers: Unleashing the Power of Inclusion.

Index Exchange was founded to address a market need for a fully transparent ad exchange, as such, it is an engineering company at heart. While continuing to invest in its technology and its people, Index Exchange respects and develops every employee.

“There’s been a lot of discourse about women’s experiences in STEM, but rarely does that conversation include fields like Technical Writing; I’m glad we’re starting to see a shift in that regard,” says Julie Palmer, Manager of Documentation at Index Exchange (and a speaker at the Breaking Down Barriers conference). “Ultimately, the more open and honest dialogues we have about the challenges women are facing across the board in STEM, the closer we’ll get to improving the workplace for everyone.”

Based in Toronto, Canada, hEr VOLUTION is the go-to place for youth, particularly young women from underserved communities to come to in order to advance in 21st Century Skills. We exist to create opportunities for the next generation of women in STEM connecting them with leaders in the industry for career support. We listen to the needs of the community and that of the STEM industry to better help the next generation of underserved youth, with a focus on young women to enter STEM. More

(Toronto, ON) – hEr VOLUTION is proud to announce Venture Out, as a new sponsor for the LGBTQA+ Breakout Session at the 2nd annual Canadian Women in STEM Conference; Breaking Down Barriers: Unleashing the Power of Inclusion.

Venture Out is a network of individuals, companies and community organizations. Together, they are building an LGBTQA+ tech and entrepreneurship community, with the goal of creating a more diverse & inclusive future.

“Venture Out is thrilled to partner with hEr VOLUTION to help facilitate a conversation on LGBTQA+ inclusion in STEM. Our organizations share the value of community, and we are grateful for Doina’s enthusiastic support of this session. When we think about “breaking down barriers,” one of the first things that comes to mind is intentionally creating a safe space for folks—LGBTQA+ and allies—to share experiences, ask questions, and listen. We hope to provide that opportunity at this conference.” – Lisa Durnford, Co-Chair, Venture Out More

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?

Now that school started and you are becoming accommodated with the new teachers, making new friends and learning new things, you may not think about the start of your career yet. Why would you?

Depending on what you want to become, or even if you don’t know yet what that is, it is very important to start thinking about your network. Sometimes is who knows you that can give you that big break in your career.

Some speakers at our conference last year (see videos here)  have stated that they did not know what they wanted to be when they grew up and that’s ok because they eventually found their calling and have succeeded anyways. Some of them did not even pursue a STEM education yet ended up working in STEM and encouraged everyone to think about that because STEM is such an important skill to have! One particular speaker is also a rock band lead singer (how cool is that!!!!).

This year, for the 2nd annual Candian Women in STEM conference, we are bringing diverse speakers again to discuss important topics such as Innovation in Technology, LGBTQA+ in STEM, STEM Communication, Financial Literacy (one of my favourite topics) and, best of all, there will be 2 Speed Networking sessions where you will have the opportunity to meet professionals who can become your mentors and guide you in the direction where you need to be.

Did you know: having a mentor will give you a 130% more chances of holding a leadership position later on in life?   More

Breaking Down Barriers: Unleashing the Power of Inclusion for Women in STEM

Is there someone who looks like me that in STEM?

What are the opportunities in STEM fields and how can I get there, too?

These simple yet significant questions were asked numerous times by the young women who showed interest yet felt out of place when it comes to learning more about STEM. Many of these young women with curious minds come from communities where no ones expects them to succeed, nevermind showing interest in learning.

Knowing that there is a wide population formed of diverse young people who are eager to learn, I quickly learned that diversity exists yet not everyone is included in the conversation.

With the Fourth Industrial Revolution here, which is more digital than ever, we know that what we learned 20 years ago is not necessarily relevant today and, in order to keep up with today’s innovative job market, one has to be exposed to learning that is pioneering and ground-breaking as early as possible.  More
